What is Blue Economy Company Index (BECdex)?

Blue Economy Company Index (BECdex) is an international standard and toolkit for identifying and certifying maritime companies that are operating their businesses in accordance with the blue economy's guiding principles. BECdex assessment and verification procedure is administered by the BECdex International Certification Center (BICC), which acts as a certification authority.

BECdex contains 3 aspects, 8 outcomes, 10 principles, 50 indicators, and 50 questions. It is a tool for self-assessment, independent assessment, and third-party certification of maritime companies.

BECdex was initiated by the Indonesia Blue Economy Center of Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Ekonomi (STIE) Indonesia Jakarta and Maritim Muda Nusantara, and was launched on November 15, 2021, by the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment of the Republic of Indonesia. Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Ekonomi (STIE) Indonesia Jakarta is a leading school of economics in Indonesia, Maritim Muda Nusantara is an Indonesian youth maritime organization and Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment.

Designing and Mapping the Blue Economy Company Index (BECdex) to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Maritime Companies in the Coastal States is a scientific paper published in the International Journal of Innovative Science and Research Technology (IJISRT) that serves as the academic foundation for BECdex.

What is Blue Economy?

Blue economy is the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and jobs while preserving the health of ocean ecosystems. The blue economy concept was introduced by Gunter Pauli in 2010 to encourage a transition from a red economy (which relies on scarcity and high investment) to a blue economy (which relies on local resources, zero waste, and multiple benefits).
